Troy's police and fire departments face off at the Battle of the Badges Friday, Oct. 9, the city's free Family Fall Fest and a Troy Historic Village cemetery tour fill Saturday, Oct. 10, and the Planning Commission meets Tuesday, Oct. 13. The library runs author talks, escape rooms and Halloween programs across the window. The week's news and school sports run in separate editions.


What's Happening in Troy

Thursday, October 8

Troy School District holds half-day parent-teacher conferences, pre-K through 12th grade, today and Friday, Oct. 9. At the Troy Public Library, Smithsonian curator Carolyn Russo discusses “The Ascent of Rauschenberg” at 2 p.m., the same hour as a Shibori Tie-Dye Workshop. All Ages Storytime is at 10 a.m., the Page-Turners Book Club at 1 p.m., The Pen and Paper Society: Teen Edition at 6 p.m., and Keeping Your Money Safe & Avoiding Scams and Family Storytime at 7 p.m.

Friday, October 9

The City of Troy Police Department and Troy Fire Department meet at the 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges at Flynn Park, first pitch at 7 p.m.; the listing says ticket information is coming. The Troy Nature Society's Owl Encounters visits the Stage Nature Center's rehabilitated owls 5-6 p.m.; registration is required at troynaturesociety.org, and the fee is $5.

A Red Cross blood drive opens at 10 a.m. at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois. The library holds Baby Play at 10:30 a.m. and two escape rooms: Five Little Pumpkins for grades K-3 at 2 p.m. and Monster Mayhem for grades 4-6 at 3:15 p.m.

Troy and Athens school games, and last week's results, run in the separate Troy High School Sports edition.

Saturday, October 10

The city's Family Fall Fest runs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with bounce houses, cider and donuts, face painting, hay rides and a pumpkin patch; the listing calls the activities free and invites families in Halloween costumes. The listing on the city calendar gives the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois, as the location. The city's own Fall Fest page gives Stine Community Park, 241 Town Center, and moves some activities to the community center in bad weather; the library's Bookmobile stop is also listed at Stine Community Park. Neither is resolved here.

The Troy Historic Village's Odd Deaths & Unique Markers Cemetery Tour visits Crooks Road Cemetery; tickets are $10, or $7 for members. The listing's time field gives 10 a.m.; its description gives “10 - 11:30 pm or 1-2:30 pm.” The library holds Project Kidsight Vision Screening at 10 a.m. and Saturday Stitches at 2 p.m.

Sunday, October 11

The Troy Historic Village opens for its Village Crafting Circle, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; registration closes at noon Friday, Oct. 9. Its Constitution Cafe, an open discussion, runs 2-3:30 p.m.; it is free, with registration required.

Monday, October 12

The library holds Babytime at 10 a.m., Drop-In Halloween Crafts at 5 p.m. and Books & Brews at 6:30 p.m., off site; the listing gives no address. Troy School District lists a Smith Grand Opening with a 10:30 p.m. time and no address or description.

Tuesday, October 13

The Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 500 W. Big Beaver Road, and the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority meets at noon in the City Hall Council Boardroom. A Red Cross blood drive opens at noon at the Troy Community Center.

Pilates at Stage, a mat class with a Club Pilates Troy instructor, runs 2-3 p.m. at the Stage Nature Center; it is free, with registration. At the library, author David Epstein speaks on How Constraints Drive Genius at 2 p.m., the Tween Advisory Board holds a Halloween party at 5 p.m., Yoga & Mindfulness is at 5:30 p.m., and Trivia Night is at Granite City at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 14

A Tom Petty Tribute Concert plays the Troy Community Center 7-8:30 p.m.; tickets are $15, all ages, bought in advance. The Troy Historic Village is Open Late, 4-7 p.m., at general admission rates. The library holds Rhyme Time at 10 a.m., College Freshmen Ready at 6 p.m. and a DIY Mini Book Nook workshop at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, October 15

The Troy Historic Village's Thursday Talks covers utopian societies of the 19th century at 2 p.m., with Alex Konieczny, its youth programs director; tickets are $15, or $10 for members. The library holds LEGO Club at 5 p.m., As Seen on TikTok: Spooky Foods Edition at 6 p.m., and Fangs, Phantasms, & Frankenstein's Monster: A History of Horror Films and Family Storytime at 7 p.m.

Friday, October 16

The library holds Baby Play at 10:30 a.m.

The library also runs its weekly Smart Space, Talk Time conversation clubs, Tutor Time, book clubs and German, Japanese and French language clubs through the window, and the Bookmobile stops at the Gables and Somerset apartments and at Hill, Morse and Wass elementary schools and Larson Middle School.

Friday, Oct. 9 — the Red Wings host the Seattle Kraken at Little Caesars Arena at 7 p.m., and the 80th Greater Detroit Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show runs at 14500 E. 12 Mile Road in Warren. Saturday, Oct. 10 — the Lumbre Festival runs at M1 Concourse in Pontiac. Sunday, Oct. 11 — Michigan men's basketball plays Eastern Michigan at Crisler Center.

Tuesday, Oct. 13 — the Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 15-16 — Leanne Morgan's Time of Our Lives Tour plays the Fox Theatre at 7 p.m. (Oct. 15, Oct. 16). Friday, Oct. 16 — the Pistons host the Toronto Raptors in a preseason game at 7 p.m.
