Oxford Center safety manager sentenced in fatal hyperbaric chamber explosion

Jeffrey Mosteller, 66, of Clinton Township, the safety manager at the Oxford Center in Troy, was sentenced Aug. 31 to 19 months to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the Jan. 31, 2025 explosion that killed 5-year-old Thomas Cooper and injured the boy's mother; a second-degree murder charge against him was dismissed. Mosteller was one of four Oxford Center workers charged: Tamela Peterson, the center's founder and CEO, and Gary Marken, its primary management assistant, were also charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, and Aleta Moffitt, who was allegedly operating the chamber at the time, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and falsifying medical records. Prosecutors say the four ignored safety guidelines for operating hyperbaric chambers, including failing to use a grounding wrist strap and using non-approved materials inside the chamber.

Final defendant sentenced in auto-theft, burglary ring that hit Troy seven times

Tijuan Marion Paige, 21, was sentenced Aug. 26 by Macomb Circuit Judge Joseph Toia to six to 20 years in prison, the last of three co-defendants sentenced for a criminal enterprise that stole vehicles from dealerships in Livingston and St. Clair counties and used them to burglarize more than two dozen gas stations and restaurants across Metro Detroit, including seven break-ins in Troy. Court records describe the burglary spree as running from Nov. 25 to Dec. 4 — the source article's own summary and body text disagree on the year, giving 2024 in one place and 2004 in the other, and both are carried here rather than resolved. MJR brings five horror classics back to the big screen for Spooky Season

MJR Theatres, which includes a location in Troy, is running its Big Screen Rewind series of horror classics from Sept. 25 through Oct. 31, with $5 tickets on sale now through the chain's website. The lineup: “Friday the 13th” (1980) Sept. 25-Oct. 1, “Scream” (1996) Oct. 2-8, “The Shining” (1980) Oct. 9-15, “The Blair Witch Project” (1999) Oct. 16-22 and “Halloween” (1978) Oct. 23-31. The Bloomfield Hills-based chain operates 10 Michigan locations, including Troy, Westland, Clinton Township, Waterford, Warren, Southgate, Chesterfield and Sterling Heights.

Storms and an EF2 tornado leave hundreds of thousands without power

Severe storms swept Southeast Michigan Thursday, Sept. 3, spawning an EF2 tornado that tore through Detroit's east side and a smaller EF0 tornado in Lincoln Park, and knocking out power to more than 350,000 utility customers regionwide. DTE Energy reported more than 241,000 of its 2 million customers still without service by mid-afternoon Friday, down from 255,345 that morning, and said it expected to restore 65% of affected customers by the end of Friday, 90% by Saturday and the rest by Sunday; Consumers Energy reported about 5,700 customers still out Friday afternoon, down from roughly 23,000 at the storms' peak. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warned residents heading into the holiday weekend to watch for post-storm scams, including unlicensed contractors and people posing as utility workers demanding upfront payment.

The Troy School District is closed Monday for Labor Day. Tuesday: Troy hosts Bloomfield Hills for boys varsity soccer, 7 p.m. Athens hosts Lake Orion, 7:15 p.m. Boys varsity tennis: Troy hosts Rochester Adams and Athens hosts Bloomfield Hills, both 4 p.m. Athens volleyball plays the Bloomfield Hills Quad on the road, and Troy's girls golf plays a regional preview at Greystone, 9:30 a.m. JV, freshman and B-team matchups in tennis, soccer and volleyball round out the day for both schools.

Wednesday, September 9 – Thursday, September 10

Cross country opens the week Wednesday — Athens at the OAA White Jamboree #1 and Troy at the OAA Jamboree #1 hosted by Lake Orion.

Thursday: Troy hosts Eisenhower for boys varsity soccer, 7 p.m., while Athens travels to Hamtramck, also 7 p.m. Troy volleyball hosts North Farmington, 7 p.m., and Athens girls swimming and diving travels to Clarkston, 6 p.m. Troy's girls golf plays the OAA Red Jamboree #1 at Sylvan Glen, and JV/freshman football, soccer and volleyball run for both schools.

Friday, September 11 – Saturday, September 12

Varsity football: Troy hosts Stoney Creek, and Athens travels to Clarkston, both 7 p.m. Friday. Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown Friday and runs through Sunday, Sept. 13, per the Troy School District calendar.

Saturday: Troy's boys varsity tennis plays at Novi (listed twice, 8 and 8:30 a.m. — not resolved here). Athens cross country runs the Algonac Muskrat Classic, and both schools' volleyball programs play weekend tournaments — Troy at the Program Cup, Athens at the Lakeview and Powerseries tournaments.
