Classifieds Guidelines and Safety
Effective Date: November 1, 2026
Troy Thrive Classifieds lets neighbors post free listings to buy, sell, give away, hire and find things locally. These guidelines apply to everyone who posts or replies to a listing. They are part of our Terms of Service, which also apply.
On this page: Stay safe · We are not responsible
1. Posting a Listing
- You need a free account with a verified email address to post or reply. Browsing and searching don't need an account.
- Post only what is real, available, yours to offer, and in the area this site serves.
- Describe it honestly, choose the right category, and use your own photos of the actual item.
- Post each item once. Don't repost it to stay at the top. You can renew a listing once it is a week old.
- Don't post anyone's private details, including your own home address. The Area field is for a neighborhood or nearby intersection.
Listings appear under your username, not your real name. A listing comes down by itself after 30 days unless you renew it, and we email you a few days before. You can close or delete it whenever you like. We delete an expired listing's photos 30 days after it expires, and the listing itself 90 days after.
New accounts can post and reply less often for their first week. Listings that mention payment methods scams often use may be looked at by us, and photos may be checked automatically before they appear.
2. What You Can't Post
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and weapons or parts for them
- Illegal drugs, marijuana, prescription medicine, alcohol and tobacco or vaping products
- Stolen goods, counterfeits, and anything sold without the right to sell it
- Recalled or unsafe products, including recalled children's products and car seats
- Adult content, sexual services, or anything that could be read as either
- Live animals for sale. Rehoming a pet with no fee beyond a modest adoption cost is fine under Community.
- Personal documents, government IDs, tickets or passes that can't legally be resold, and financial or account credentials
- Pyramid schemes, get-rich-quick offers, loans, and "work from home" offers that ask for money up front
- Anything else that is illegal, or that breaks section 3 of our Terms of Service
3. Housing and Jobs
Housing listings must follow fair housing law, and job listings must follow equal employment law. Don't state or imply a preference for or against anyone based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status, age, height, weight, marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity. Describe the home or the job, not the person you have in mind. Job listings must describe a real job with a real employer.
4. Replying to a Listing
When you reply, we email your message to the poster. Your own email address goes with it, so they can answer you directly. Their address stays hidden until they do, and from then on you are talking to each other, not through us. We don't keep a copy of your message. Replies are for that listing only: no sales pitches, no spam, and no harassment.
5. Stay Safe
Most people are honest, but we can't tell you who is. Please read this before you meet anyone or send anything.
Meeting in person
- Meet in a busy public place in daylight. Many police stations have a parking lot you can use for exactly this. Call your local non-emergency line to ask.
- Take someone with you if you can, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Don't give out your home address. For something too big to move, have someone else there, and keep the item in a garage or by the door.
- Bring a charged phone and your own transport, and don't get into a stranger's car.
- If something feels wrong, leave. You don't owe anyone a sale. If you are in danger, call 911.
Money
- Deal locally and in person, and look at the item before you pay.
- Never wire money or pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency or a payment app to someone you haven't met. Those payments are close to impossible to get back.
- Don't accept a cashier's check or money order, or any offer to pay more than the price and have you send back the difference. The check can look fine for days before it bounces, and you owe the money.
- Don't pay a deposit on something you haven't seen.
Common scams
- Verification codes. Someone asks you to read back a code sent to your phone "to prove you're real". That code unlocks one of your accounts. Never share one.
- Overpayment. A buyer sends too much and asks for a refund of the difference. The original payment later fails.
- Fake shipping. A buyer or seller is out of town, in the military or overseas, and wants to use a shipper or agent. Walk away.
- Rentals. A cheap home, a landlord who can't show it, and a deposit before you get the keys. See inside, and confirm who owns it with public property records.
- Jobs. An employer sends you a check to buy equipment, or asks for your bank details or Social Security number before you have been hired.
- Vehicles. Check the title against the seller's ID and the VIN on the vehicle, get a vehicle history report, and have a mechanic look at it. Complete the transfer in person at a Secretary of State office if you can.
Items
- Check children's products, car seats and appliances at cpsc.gov/Recalls, and vehicles at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Test anything electrical or mechanical before you pay for it.
If something goes wrong
- Call 911 if you are in danger. For a crime or theft, report it to your local police.
- For fraud, you can also report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and the FTC.
- Use the Report control on the listing so we can look at it, and let us know through the Contact page about a reply that shouldn't have been sent.
6. We Are Not Responsible for Listings or Deals
Listings are written and posted by members of the public, not by Troy Thrive or Logols LLC ("we"). We are not a party to any sale, rental, job, service or other arrangement between users, and we are not a seller, buyer, landlord, employer, broker, agent or marketplace operator for any of them.
- We don't check. We don't pre-screen listings, verify who posted them, inspect items or confirm that anything described is real, safe, legal, accurately priced or still available. A listing appearing here is not an endorsement.
- We don't handle the money or the goods. Payment, delivery, quality, title, warranties and taxes are entirely between the people involved. We can't refund you, recover anything for you, or settle a dispute.
- You act at your own risk. You are responsible for deciding whether to reply, meet, pay or hand anything over, and for your own safety when you do. The safety tips above are general suggestions, not a guarantee that following them will keep you safe.
- To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, injury, damage or dispute arising from a listing, a reply, a meeting or a transaction between users, or from the conduct of any user, whether online or offline. Classifieds are provided "as is" and "as available". The limitation of liability, disclaimers and indemnity in our Terms of Service apply.
- You are responsible for what you post, and for complying with every law that applies to it, including those on consumer protection, licensing, housing, employment and sales tax.
Nothing here limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
7. Reporting and Removal
Every listing has a Report control and a Block control for signed-in users. We review every report. A listing reported by several people is hidden until we have looked at it. We may remove any listing, with or without a report and without notice, and we may suspend or remove an account that breaks these guidelines. A block hides that account's listings from you and stops its replies reaching you, and the other person isn't told.
Removing a listing doesn't undo anything that already happened because of it, and we don't monitor every listing, so please don't rely on us having seen a problem. Report it.
